Villanelles for one, two, and three voices by Kapsberger and his contemporaries
This program highlights the villanelle, popular vocal forms of 17th-century Italy. Centered around the first four books of villanelles published by Girolamo Kapsberger between 1610 and 1623, Les Kapsber’girls offer a reading that is both historical and sensorial of these little musical gems.
At times comic, at times melancholic, these pieces draw on street songs and popular poetry, while being composed with a learned art of prosody and harmony. The program alternates naïve love songs, whimsical dialogues, portraits of women, and instrumental dances.
An invitation to dream and to lightness, delivered with finely crafted playing.
